I don’t own a boat, but I got this boat hook to help me place some lights around a large tree in our yard. It’s perfect for the job. The pole is very light and yet very strong and sturdy, so using it isn’t too tiring. The hook at the end, while made of plastic, will withstand anything I’m going to use it for. Because the whole thing extends and retracts, it’s easily stowed out of the way. I’ve already used it not just for the lights, but retrieving a toy plane from the roof, knocking a broken branch out of a tree, and moving some debris from the gutter. I love this pole, and while you’d think you could use just about anything for these tasks, it’s nice to have something around that’s meant for these kinds of tasks.
I've been boating most of my life, and during that time I've had many bot hooks. This is one of the better ones. I liked it right out of the box. Sturdy pole with a good hook on the end. One reviewer said the hook wasn't very strong, but it looks and feels plenty strong to me. It's a little bit flexible which makes me think it might bend and not break. Your mileage may vary..The pole feels good in the hands... it has a good diameter to allow a good grip. What I really like is the friction adjustment lock to adjust the length. It very easily loosens and tightens and when tight feels rock solid. It feels solid even at full extension.This hook will be a welcome addition to our boat accessories.

Lightweight. STURDY. Easy to use. It’s a good choice. We pulled the boat into the dock in a strong current with no loss of “grip” or loosening of the joint areas! Foam grips would be nice (nitpicking a bit)…but it collapses and stows away so easily…it’s worth it!!
This grapple hook, once assembled, extends my reach from six to ten feet. The pole is made of metal and is strong, not flimsy when extended. The pole is light enough that I can reach out with one hand to pull an object. The hook itself is a hard plastic that seems capable of taking some abuse, while being light enough to keep the pole from being too top heavy. The hook has a decent concave head construction, where trying to grapple an object with a rounded frame (like a boat in the middle of a small river or canal) seems like it would be plausible but I have not had to do that yet, if that situation arises, at least I have a tool that will help me. It is handy pulling the rope in on my little paddle boat and guiding it away from the dock when moving it, to prevent bumping. I can definitely use this tool for a variety of things.
